How to Remove a Background in PowerPoint

PowerPoint has a built-in Remove Background tool that erases the background of any picture right on your slide — no other software needed. Here's exactly how to use it on Windows and Mac, where it falls short, and the faster one-click option when you need clean edges.

Step-by-step: PowerPoint's Remove Background tool

  1. 1

    Insert and select the image

Add your picture to a slide via Insert > Pictures. Click it once so the blue Picture Format tab appears on the ribbon.

  2. 2

    Click Remove Background

On the Picture Format tab, click Remove Background at the far left. PowerPoint shades everything it thinks is background in magenta (pink).

  3. 3

    Refine the selection

Use Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove to draw over spots it got wrong. Drag the handles of the box to include the whole subject.

  4. 4

    Keep Changes

Click Keep Changes (or press Enter). The magenta areas turn transparent, leaving only your subject on the slide.

  5. 5

(Optional) Save as a transparent PNG

To reuse the cutout elsewhere, right-click the picture > Save as Picture > choose PNG so the transparency is preserved.

Where PowerPoint's tool falls short

  • Hair, fur, and soft edges come out jagged — the tool works on color, not on a real understanding of the subject.
  • Low-contrast images (subject and background are similar colors) need many manual Mark Areas passes.
  • Not in PowerPoint for the web — the free online version can only adjust transparency, not remove backgrounds.
  • It's slow when you have several images to process across a deck.

The faster alternative: one click in your browser

When PowerPoint can't get clean edges — or you just have a lot of images — an AI background remover is faster and sharper. MiaoCut uses the BiRefNet segmentation model to cut out your subject (including hair and fur in Fine mode) in about a second. Download the transparent PNG and insert it onto your slide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every version of PowerPoint have Remove Background?

The Remove Background tool is in PowerPoint 2010 and later on Windows, PowerPoint for Mac 2016 and later, and Microsoft 365. It is not available in PowerPoint for the web — there you can only set a picture's transparency, not remove a background.

Why does PowerPoint remove the wrong parts of my image?

Its tool keys off color and contrast, so it struggles when the subject and background are similar colors, or with hair, fur, and soft edges. You correct it with Mark Areas to Keep / Remove, but on complex images that takes many passes.

How do I get a clean transparent PNG from a difficult photo?

For hair, fur, or busy backgrounds, an AI background remover gets cleaner edges than PowerPoint's color-based tool. Use MiaoCut to remove the background in one click, download the transparent PNG, then insert it onto your slide.

Can I remove a background in PowerPoint on a Mac?

Yes. The steps are the same on Mac: select the image, open the Picture Format tab, click Remove Background, refine with the Mark Areas tools, and click Keep Changes.
